Parasite Trailer
Key themes - Parasitism, Class, Hope
More themes - Violence, Deception, Capitalism and Colonialism, Environmental and infrastructural collapse.
How the theme is denoted -
Parasitism
The Park family are parasites because they cannot function without the assistance of servants. They're leeching off the people that work for them. They are constantly relaying on the lower classes to maintain their class. The Parks also don't work as hard for their money. They just inherited whatever money their parents left behind. This all could show the Park family are the parasites.
Hope in parasitism - However, the Kims might also be the parasites along with them as they also relay on the well off to feed themselves. Since the Kims get a job from the Parks family, which they can use to redeem themselves. Because now they will get a lot more money then if they hadn't come across this opportunity.
Class
0:03 - 0:07 In the Beginning of the trailer - we can see Ki-woo and his sister Ki-Jung desperately trying to search for Wi-Fi, as the one that they used before was their neighbours but they had changed the password. Then finally they found a Wi-Fi signal from a near by café and connected to it. Here we also see how the toilet is higher than their other rooms that shows how down below they really live. (They live in a semi-basement house).
0:50 -1:04 However for the wealthy Park family they don't need to worry about such things - This is clearly denoted by their living space. Which is grand and elegant.
Hope
0:20 Min (His well- off friend from secondary school) brings a state of hope onto Ki woo (main character) By saying to teach English to a rich Korean girl named Da-hye. The rock that is shown in the trailer is also a sense of hope in for the Kim family, and Ki- woo believes that. This could be because Min gave the rock to them and when he gave the rock he said. the rock will bring his family good luck and great wealth.
Explain/Connote of how the theme affects the audience -
Hope
The audience has hope for the Kim family and they expect to see the Kim family grow from this opportunity that Min gave them grow from this. They are so poor and struggling with money and now they work for the wealthy Park family but will that change anything for them? And will the Park family find out the Kim family is a fraud? what happens to the after math. Since Min recommended Ki-woo what will happen to Min?
The stone that is shown is also from Min. His grandfather told Min to give it to the Kim's as they believe this will bring wealth and good luck to the family.
Explain how you might explore the theme in your film -
The main aspect of the movie is to show class inequality, which is apparent in the trailer too. Showing its significance. The aspirational wealth of the Parks is a kind of parasite of competition, a nagging sense of "never enough." Likewise, the poorer characters share this parasite, the desire to become upwardly mobile and enjoy all the benefits of wealth.
