Written Synopsis

Section 1: Content

The husband (John) and wife (Katy) go on a date to celebrate their anniversary. They go on a date in the UK in a small cafe and are having brunch. Over the brunch they talk about Emily's (Katy's sister) husband and how he passed away acting like she wasn't the one who killed him. Later that day after the brunch Katy calls Emily to see how she's doing, knowing well that Emily isn't over the death of her husband. Emily starts yelling on the phone about how Katy still has a husband. Emily finds out it was Katy that murdered her husband but doesn't know the reason why she did it. Emily plans revenge to murder Katy. Emily get's a fake undercover detective to help her. Once Emily successfully kills Katy she later finds out that Katy's  husband is trying to find out who killed his wife and why. Eventually he finds a recording that Emily recorded of her killing Katy. The villain is Emily because she killed Katy. The Helper is the fake undercover detective who helps Emily to help kill Katy'. The Hero is the John the husband he will find out who it is and report it to the police. The False Hero is Emily because she murdered her sister. The hero that sends the dispatcher off is the recording because the only reason he found out was because of the recording then he goes to police and then gets her to prison for a lifetime.

Section 2: Narrative

The three act structure in this is in the beginning everything is normal John and Katy were celebrating because their anniversary, but then it all goes downhill from there, it is at a state of equilibrium. The climax is that Emily's husband passed away and wants revenge because Katy has killed Emily's husband and then Emily wants to kill Katy for revenge and get's a "detective" to help. Eventually Emily kills Katy, this disturbs the equilibrium. The falling action is when John finds out that Emily killed Katy, he's trying to restore the equilibrium. Then John goes to the police and tells them everything and shows them the recording that Emily was recording, then Emily goes to prison for a lifetime. He then restores the equilibrium but it's not the same since his wife is dead. My story is a linear structure because it goes in the order of start, middle and end and it's all in chronological order.

Section 3: Genre

One of the thriller conventions is when the protagonist is investigating and chasing the clues in order to find or trap the antagonist, so the protagonist is solving a crime. How we are going to add that to the story is by John trying to find out who killed Katy and why they did it, he's investigating and finds an unexpected video that he didn't see coming that will help him in many ways. Another thriller convention is a story that contains elements that have a sense of suspense. We can use that in our film because Emily wants revenge by killing the person who she thinks killed her husband which is also her sister Katy and she actually kills her only to have the recording to get sent to Katy's husband John, when he's the one trying to figure everything out. The last thriller convention is when the protagonist defeats the antagonist. We are going to use that for our film because once John finds the recording he shows it to the police and now the police are on her case because she killed someone, once they got the proof that they want she got arrested for killing someone and would never be allowed to get out. The sub-genre in this thriller is crime because it's all about investigating a murder.

Section 4: Style

Thriller camera conventions that i can use in my thriller film are close ups because they give a lot of suspense and also when there is a close up in someone's face you can clearly see the emotion in their face, if they are feeling a certain way the audience can clearly see it. Another thriller camera convention that i would use in my thriller film is tracking or panning. This technique is usually used in horror films when it looks like one of the characters is being followed or watched. It also gives a full view on what's happening in the scene. It also helps build tension and suspense in the scene. I could use this when Emily is killing Katy because it would be really suspenseful at that time. Thriller editing conventions i would use are parallel editing and that is when there are some parts where the scene would be very fast paced and some parts where the scene would be really slow paced. I can use that to make more of an exciting effect on the audience. Jump cuts is another editing convention, How i can use this is maybe having a small montage in the beginning that shows Katy killing Emily's husband. Thriller sound conventions i can use is a screaming sound when Emily murders Katy and Katy would scream because Emily is killing her. Another thriller sound convention is non-diegetic sound and i could use that when there is a part in the film that wouldn't have any talking but a soundtrack would be played. The thriller mise-en-scene conventions i would use is lighting and colours and how i could use that is having different levels of low key lighting that would create suspense or a mysterious atmosphere. Another mise-en-scene convention i would use is setting and props, how i can use that is by having objects that can help determine the narrative and the identity of the characters and genre like a knife that killed Katy.

Section 5: Brief interpretation

in the brief it has that it needs to be shot in the UK and aimed towards 16-24 year olds. Our film will be shot in the Uk and its aimed at 16-24 year olds because this film is all about murder and getting investigated and caught. It also has a big cliffhanger that these ages would love.

It also says that it will screen in a festival next year and that it should include conventions of a film opening. How we are going to do that is by putting engaging music in the beginning of the film opening, our engaging music will create suspense and intrigue the audience and enigmas to introduce the film and the characters. In the brief it says that the age target audience is 16-24 year olds, even though most of the characters are 24 audiences will like the storyline since it is interesting and has the suspense that the young audiences would like. There are many plot twists that the audience won't see coming which makes the audience want to watch the film even more. Some of the plot twists would be why Katy killed Emily's husband because he kidnapped her and abused her until she couldn't take it anymore and also how Emily and Katy are sisters and that Emily killed her own sister.

It also says how it should have techniques used in the thriller genre, like themes such as death, murder and crime, plot twists, characters that make up the thriller genre like a murder or a detective and having surprising events.
